The Bible
The Bible is like a huge treasure chest filled with coins of
knowledge, jewels of wisdom, and rubies of warning. But the Bible holds hidden
treasures also. I’d like to uncover a few of those hidden treasures so that you
can better understand the Bible.
1. THE BIBLE TELLS ABOUT THE PAST
This is a fact almost everyone
knows. Even if you’ve never held a Bible in your hands, you probably know that
the Bible talks about the past quite a bit. I was looking through an old
notebook of mine and there was a page that said, “The Bible is the world’s
history in the palm of your hand.” The Old Testament is the first 39 books of
the Bible. They tell about creation, all the way to Jesus’s birth. And many of
them tell about past events!
2. THE BIBLE TELLS ABOUT THE PRESENT
Many of the things people might think about
the Bible is that it is old, and won’t apply to your daily life. It is true
that the Bible is an old history book. But it will also apply to your daily
life. There are MANY verses that still apply to today. For example, there are
quite a few verses that talk about pride. Even though the Bible was written
thousands of years ago, I still struggle with pride every day! And God knew it!
That’s why he wrote all of the verses about pride!
3. THE BIBLE TELLS ABOUT THE FUTURE
Hold on. The super old, dusty,
giant Bible that was written thousands of years ago tells about past, present,
AND future? YES! Look in Revelation. Revelation is the very last book of the
Bible. It was written by the apostle John. It was written at about 95 A.D.
(After Death) from the island of Patmos, where many scholars believe John was
exiled by Emperor Domitian. Revelation tells about “the full identity of Christ
and gives warning and hope to believers.” (From the “Bible Travel Guide for
Students” book) In other words, it tells about the future! Cool right?
4. WHERE SHOULD I START?
Many people try to start reading at
the very beginning. But I would recommend not reading through all of the Old
Testament. Every single word of the Bible is important, but I would recommend
reading Genesis (first book of the Bible), then move to Matthew. The Old
Testament talks about how God’s people, who were still living under the Ten
Commandments, turned away from Him. The moral of it, is that the people turned
away from God, God would work some crazy miracle, then they would come back to
Him and the process would start again. Basically, it shows why Jesus needed to
come. The New Testament is a great place to read. I’ve read through John and I
absolutely loved it! It talked about Jesus and His life. It also included many
of Jesus’s parables (stories). Here is something you need to know: Matthew,
Mark, Luke, and John, are the first 4 books of the New Testament. We call them
the Gospels. They all tell about Jesus’s life in different ways. So, whichever
one you go with, you will still be learning about the life of Jesus.
5. HOW DO I LEARN IT?
If you haven’t already figured it
out, the Bible has a ton of information! How am I supposed to dissect all the
information in order that I can understand it better? One thing that I do is I
read the Bible with a pen in my hand. If I see a verse I like and want to
remember, I will highlight it, and if I really, really like it, I will maybe
put a post it note so I can always find it, or write it down in a notebook. That
is how I found the quote in the first paragraph! I found it in my old notebook!
If you have a dry erase board somewhere in your house, you can also write it
there.
6. WHY IS IT SO CONFUSING?
The Bible can be very confusing.
Take it from me. There have been many passages that I have had to ask someone
for help to understand. But why? Why is the Bible so confusing? First of all,
like we have already said, the Bible was written thousands of years ago.
Everyone talked very differently than today. Think about George Washington. He
probably spoke very differently than we speak today. So if the Bible was
written thousands of years before George Washington, don’t you think it would
be written a little different than today? It would! Another reason the Bible
can be confusing, is because it might have more than one meaning. Like we
mentioned before, Jesus told many parables or stories to the people he preached
to. Many parables might not make sense because there is a deeper meaning.
Sometimes it seems like Jesus is telling a riddle and just wants us to spend
more time in His word until we figure it out!
Thank
you so much for reading and I hope this encouraged and
inspired you as well as many others!
inspired you as well as many others!

Grace
